Train accident in Bukit Mertajam. No one died but the Varanus Salvator cut into two
Breaking news. The above pictures could be too violent for the faint and weak hearts. Goods train collided with a local resident, Varanus Salvator or Malayan water monitor lizard at Bukit Mertajam on December 13, 2010. Crime Scene Investigator (CSI) was at the scene on that beautiful Monday afternoon to record and investigate the death. It was a local resident of the habitat near the 10.5 km Bukit Mertajam-Butterworth Railway track. Apparently the local authority ruled out suicide or foul play as the motive since there were no evidence or elements to suggest so. The monitor lizard was about 1 meter long and weighed 2.0 kg approximately. It is of the common specie found common in Malaysia and also a common roadkill.
The causes of death are attributed to :
1) The Monitor lizard was crossing the line when the goods train was coming to Town around 4.30 pm local time.
2) The habitat of the monitor lizard have been disturbed by the Malaysian Electric Train Double Tracking Railway project which caused the wildlife to be dislocated and disoriented.
3) The monitor lizard was trespassing and ignored the warning of the oncoming goods train.
File closed. May our Varanus Salvator R.I.P.
